Introduction

OhioHealth piloted InpharmD with a 13-person core group from P&T and the teams that report to it, plus 43 exploratory users. The core group saved 2.5 FTE against a 0.75 FTE target, and in Q2 2025 the P&T committee handled 73 agenda items, with InpharmD assisting on 51%.

The Challenge

The medication use team faced a growing number of new drugs, more complex therapies such as cell therapies, and a growing system. FDA approvals rose 55%, and OhioHealth grew from 12 hospitals to 17. Each new hospital added:

  • Drug formulary and policy alignment
  • IV concentration standardization and administration handbook alignment
  • New providers and pharmacy teams to support
  • New P&T physician chairs to maintain

The Solution

OhioHealth wanted to increase efficiency on time-intensive work, expand pharmacist capacity without adding FTEs, and shape an early-stage partner around its needs. InpharmD answered clinical questions, summarized literature, wrote monographs and class reviews, and supplied evidence for therapeutic interchanges, shortage alternatives and drug stability.

Before starting, OhioHealth set clear bars: an average rating above 4 of 5, over 90% of non-P&T responses within 3 days, over 80% of P&T requests within 2 weeks, and at least 0.75 FTE saved in the core group.

Results

Both groups far exceeded the savings bar, and P&T throughput jumped in Q2 2025.

Detailed Impact

Faster P&T review means formulary savings start sooner. Two projects alone offset $345K:

ProjectProjected annual savingsGo-live movedEarlier savings
Inpatient IV iron (generic Ferrlecit)$400K+Sep 2025 → Dec 2024$300,000
Tocilizumab biosimilar (Tyenne)$90K+Jun 2025 → Dec 2024$45,000

Key Takeaways

  • P&T agenda capacity up to 73 items in one quarter
  • 2.5 FTE saved in the core group, over 3x the target
  • $345K from earlier formulary go-lives
  • Most valuable for medication use and project management roles
  • A safer way to adopt AI while the technology matures

What's Next

Beyond hours saved, OhioHealth gains therapeutic interchange sharing, the InpharmD drug shortage network, payer coverage and medication pipeline visibility, all helping the team absorb new drugs, new hospitals and new services.
